WATER DIVISION

OUR MISSION . . .

The mission of the Water Division is to promote public health and welfare by providing safe, clean drinking water to the residents of the City of South Salt Lake that complies with all City, State and Federal regulations.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE INFORMATION

The city has received inquiries from citizens related to backflow prevention devices; the Water Department’s overall goal is the safety of every person who uses our culinary water system, and we are in the process of establishing an inventory of systems which have backflow potential (most com

monly, buried sprinkler systems) for inspection record purposes.  Due to the concern of many citizens, the city will not be enforcing the 30-day deadline cited in the letter and on the city’s website.

Backflow devices are required by code on any connection which has backflow potential, and property owners should begin taking steps to have such devices installed. The city will study the backflow prevention program over the next six months. We appreciate your input and feedback, as well as your efforts to keep the water system clean and safe.

The city has compiled a list of frequently asked questions regarding the letter and your obligations. Click here to view or print the FAQ.

If your questions are not answered by the frequently asked questions page, please contact the City Water Department at (801) 483-6045.

Ways to Save Water Outdoors

  • Don't over-water landscaping.
  • Water your lawn or garden early in the morning or late in evening.
  • Adjust sprinklers so that they don't water the sidewalk or street.
  • Don't water on cool, rainy or windy days.
  • Equip all hoses with shut-off nozzles.
  • Use drip irrigation systems.
  • Plant drought-tolerant or low water use plants and grasses.
  • Use shrubs and ground cover to reduce the amount of grass.
  • Place mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and discourage weeds.
  • Set your mower blades one notch higher, since longer grass means less vaporation.
  • Use a pool cover to cut down on water evaporation.
  • Use a bucket instead of a hose to wash your car.
  • Use a broom rather than a hose to clean sidewalks, driveways, loading docks and parking lots.
