August 1, 2019 - Endangered Missing Child
Police are trying to locate 12 year-old Asiah Mister, who has was reported missing at 12:45 am this morning. Asiah is described as a 12 year-old black female, 5'00" tall, 90 lbs, with black hair worn in a ponytail. She was last seen wearing a lavender shirt with multi-color llamas and 4 squares, light blue jeans and grey fuzzy slippers. Anyone with information is asked to call police dispatch at 801-840-4000.
UPDATE: The child has been found, safe and well.
The Endangered Missing Alert for Asiah Mister was cancelled at 11:37 A.M. on August 1.
Asiah Mister did not go to the Maverik Convenience Store as reported.
Asiah Mister went to a neighboring apartment complex and met her 12 year-old friend who was with two other girls (ages 16 and 12). The group of 4 girls decided to have a sleep-over at one of the girl’s home in West Valley City. The location of West Valley home was near a location discovered by the grandmother via a location phone app, which she then gave to police.
One of the girls’ mother drove the group of girls to the home in West Valley City. Asiah did not contact her grandmother to advise her of the sleep-over.
The following morning one of the girls saw a picture of Asiah on social media and called police that lead to Asiah’s safe return.
May 24, 2019 - Catalytic Converter Thefts
On Thursday, May 16, 2019, between the hours of 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM, catalytic converters were stolen from six Dodge Ram trucks (2018 & 2019 models). The thefts occurred at Salt Lake Valley Dodge, located at 2309 S State St.
April 3, 2019 - Fatal Hit & Run Suspect Arrested
On Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at approximately 2:30 PM, police arrested the suspected driver involved in the March 9, 2019 fatal auto/pedestrian hit & run, where two pedestrians were struck in a crosswalk.
July 1, 2018 - Drive-by Shooting
On Saturday, June 30 police were dispatched to a "Shots Fired" call in the area of 247 E Southgate Ave. When police arrived, they discovered the house had been hit by at least 8 bullets. No one in the residence was injured or hit by the gunfire.
June 18, 2018 - Hostage/Homicide/Aggravated Assault
The name of the suspect and one of the victims from a hostage situation that turned into a homicide on Sunday, June 17 are being released.
June 16, 2018 - Motorcyclist In Critical Condition After Hitting SUV
On June 16 at approximately 11:41 AM, police were dispatched to 3750 S State St on a crash involving a motorcycle and a Toyota SUV.
June 10, 2018 - Shooting
On June 10, shortly before 4:30 AM, the South Salt Lake Police responded to a shooting at the Brickstone Apartments, located at 220 E 3300 S. Information from dispatch indicated someone had attempted to break into an apartment and was shot.
April 25, 2018 - Unused Medication Take Back Event
On Saturday, April 28, the South Salt Lake Police Department will be hosting a take back event for unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The event will be held in the parking lot of Rite Aid at 3250 S 700 E from 10 am until 2 pm.
April 25, 2018 - Crosswalk Traffic Enforcement
On Thursday, April 26, the South Salt Lake Police Department will be conducting a crosswalk traffic enforcement operation at two crosswalks that have received numerous complaints through the South Salt Lake Traffic Safety Committee. The goal is to educate motorists through the enforcement of state statutes as they pertain to yielding to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk.
March 19, 2018 - Fatal Stabbing
On March 19, 2018 at 6:32 PM police were dispatched on a stabbing at an apartment located at 2757 S 300 E. The 911 caller told the call taker he had just stabbed his father. Police took the 38 year-old male suspect into custody without incident.
March 6, 2018 - Recovered Stolen Property
On March 6, 2018 at approximately 8:00 AM, a South Salt Lake Code Enforcement Officer located an abandoned trailer parked on the street at 66 W Oakland Ave and summoned police to impound the trailer. Police discovered the trailer was stolen. After obtaining a search warrant, police recovered many stolen trailers, boats, jet skis, ATVs and a large amount of additional stolen property. Police have arrested a male in connection to this case.
March 3, 2018 - Apartment Party Turns Deadly
On March 3, 2018 at 3:36 AM police were dispatched to a shooting at the Mountain Shadows Apartments. When police arrived they discovered two males with gunshot wounds. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and the other man was transported to the hospital via ambulance. A short time later a female, who was at the same apartment, arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound. Police have arrested a 20 year-old male in connection with this case.
February 13, 2018 - Shooting
On February 13, 2018, a 16 year-old male was shot while walking on 300 East. Detectives were able to identify and arrest the 20 year-old suspect.
January 17, 2018 - Crosswalk Traffic Sting
The South Salt Lake Police Department Traffic Unit and Community Resources Unit conducted a crosswalk traffic sting at various crosswalk locations, in response to a citizen complaint that vehicles were not stopping for pedestrians using the crosswalks. By the completion of the operation, officers handled 43 crosswalk violations (carries a $120 fine), 1 drug arrest and 1 pedestrian violation.
December 30, 2017 - Bystander Wounded by Gang Shooting
On Saturday, December 30, 2017 at approximately 1:00 PM police were dispatched on a report of shots fired at the 7-11 convenience store located at 2700 S State St, after occupants of a vehicle and two males on the corner exchanged gang signs and shots were fired.
November 30, 2017 - Sherry Black Homicide - DNA Based "Snapshot" of Suspect & Reward Increased to $250,000
Seven years ago on this date, South Salt Lake Police were dispatched on a possible homicide, and upon arriving discovered 64-year old Sherry Black had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death. Police were able to recover blood evidence from the crime scene. With the advancement in technology, the DNA sample was recently used to create a "snapshot" of what the suspect may look like.
August 30, 2017 - Bullet Bike Hits Pedestrian
On August 29, 2017 at 11:57 PM, police were dispatched on a hit and run crash involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian at 3300 S 900 W. After hitting the pedestrian, the suspect motorcycle fled the scene westbound on 3300 South. The 49 year old male victim was transported to an area hospital in very critical condition with life threatening head trauma.
August 13, 2017 - Body Discovered in Mill Creek
On Sunday, August 13, 2017 at approximately 4:00 pm, South Salt Lake Police were dispatched on a body floating in Mill Creek in the area of 135 W 2950 S. Police located what appears to be a male body that had become lodged on some debris at 235 W 2950 S.
April 27, 2017 - Armed Robbery - Suspects Arrested
On Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at approximately 1:15 pm, an armed robbery occurred at Wasatch Metal Recycling (205 W 3300 S). A male gunman wearing a mask entered the business, went around the counter, pointed a silver pistol at a female employee and said, "Get out of the way." The gunman grabbed the cash box, which slipped out of his hand, spilling the contents on the floor. The gunman was able to collect an undisclosed amount of cash, and ran out the door to a waiting silver Pontiac G6 with a femal driver.
April 17, 2017 - Homicide
On Sunday, April 16, 2017 at approximately 2:45 pm, police were dispatched to the area of 3200 S 900 W on a dead body. When police arrived, they discovered a late model black Mazda passenger car in a parking lot with the driver's door open and a deceased male victim with a gunshot wound, which does not appear to be self-inflicted.
January 9, 2017 - Fatal Crash
On January 8, 2017 a fatal crash occurred on State Street at I-80. A 36 year old male victim driving a white Hyundai was struck by a stolen black BMW SUV. The victim was ejected from the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of the crash, the BMW SUV was occupied by three individuals - two males and one female. When police arrived on scene, all three of the occupants of the SUV had exited the vehicle.
November 21, 2016 - Books to the Rescue
Ashley Jacobson brings Books to the Rescue to South Salt Lake Police. Books to the Rescue! is a sponsored initiative by the Community Foundation of Utah to stock first responder vehicles with engaging children's books and stuffed animals for children in crisis situations.
November 18, 2016 - Shooting
On Friday, November 18, 2016 at approximately 4:00 pm, the male suspect and his girlfriend (female victim) went to 480 E Stanley Ave to get a cell phone from the girlfriend's mother. The mother was not home so the female victim decided to take an X-Box belonging to another (non-related) person in the household as collateral. An argument ensued, and the 22 year-old suspect fired two shots. One bullet hit the ground and the second bullet hit the victim in the upper torso.
September 12, 2016 - Aggravated Armed Robbery
On Monday, September 12, 2016 at approximately 10:57 am, the Maverik Convenience Store, located at 514 W 3900 S, was robbed at gun point. The employee told police that three young black males in the 20s walked in to the store, looked around for a short time, then approached the counter, brandished a silver handgun and demanded cash. The three suspects ran out of the store to a small red passenger car that was parked in the neighborhood directly behind the Maverik.
August 17, 2016 - 2016 Pete Suazo Boxing Invitational
The South Salt Lake Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) is hosting it's 7th annual Pete Suazo Boxing Invitational Friday and Saturday, August 19th & 20th, starting at 6:30 pm each night, at the Central Park Community Center - 2797 S 200 E. This event was established to honor the late Senator Pete Suazo, whose dream was to give inner city youth a positive outlet. This event will host male and female amateur boxers from Utah, California, Nevada and Idaho, ages 8 to 21.
July 22, 2016 - Package Theft Sting Puts Two Thieves In Jail
On Thursday, July 21, 2016 the South Salt Lake Police Community Resource Unit initiated a "package sting operation" in response to reports of delivered packages being stolen from the porches of local neighborhoods.
The package sting operation was a success, with two individuals being arrested and booked in to jail on separate incidents.
June 29, 2016 - Armed Robbery
At approximately 8:30 PM on Sunday, June 26, 2016, Smoker's Point at 283 E 3300 S was robbed at gun point by two males. Both suspects brandished handguns and threatened the store employee.
Suspect #1 was a white male wearing a black ball cap, gray long sleeved shirt with a Pittsburgh Steelers pin on the coller, and had a moustache and a long goatee. Suspect #2 is an unknown male wearing all black with a black face mask.
March 31, 2016 - South Salt Lake Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) Receives 2015 FBI Director's Community Leadership Award
The South Salt Lake Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) is being honored for its commitment to the PAL Boxing Program, that seeks to reduce juvenile crime through positive youth development and promotion of academic excellence in collaboration with community and law enforcement partners. Mayor Cherie Wood said, "We are so proud of the youth of our community, and so grateful for our very unique police department and its innovative approach to reducing crime in South Salt Lake."
The FBI Director's Community Leadership Award is an award presented annually by each of the FBI's 56 field offices across the country. The award was created in 1990 as a means for the FBI to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts in improving the lives of the most vulnerable within their communities.
November 30, 2015 - Sherry Black Homicide
Five years ago on this date, November 30, 2010, at 1:43 PM, South Salt Lake Police were dispatched to B&W Billiards & Books (3466 S 700 E) on a possible homicide. Sherry Black had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death. Police were able to recover blood evidence from the crime scene. The suspect's blood DNA profile has been entered on the nationwide database CODIS, but has not yet identified a match.
The investigation of the Sherry Black murder is still ongoing, and has never been considered a "cold case". There is a $50,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the brutal death of Sherry Black.
