November 30, 2017 - Sherry Black Homicide - DNA Based "Snapshot" of Suspect & Reward Increased to $250,000
Seven years ago on this date, South Salt Lake Police were dispatched on a possible homicide, and upon arriving discovered 64-year old Sherry Black had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death. Police were able to recover blood evidence from the crime scene. With the advancement in technology, the DNA sample was recently used to create a "snapshot" of what the suspect may look like.
August 30, 2017 - Bullet Bike Hits Pedestrian
On August 29, 2017 at 11:57 PM, police were dispatched on a hit and run crash involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian at 3300 S 900 W. After hitting the pedestrian, the suspect motorcycle fled the scene westbound on 3300 South. The 49 year old male victim was transported to an area hospital in very critical condition with life threatening head trauma.
August 13, 2017 - Body Discovered in Mill Creek
On Sunday, August 13, 2017 at approximately 4:00 pm, South Salt Lake Police were dispatched on a body floating in Mill Creek in the area of 135 W 2950 S. Police located what appears to be a male body that had become lodged on some debris at 235 W 2950 S.
April 27, 2017 - Armed Robbery - Suspects Arrested
On Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at approximately 1:15 pm, an armed robbery occurred at Wasatch Metal Recycling (205 W 3300 S). A male gunman wearing a mask entered the business, went around the counter, pointed a silver pistol at a female employee and said, "Get out of the way." The gunman grabbed the cash box, which slipped out of his hand, spilling the contents on the floor. The gunman was able to collect an undisclosed amount of cash, and ran out the door to a waiting silver Pontiac G6 with a femal driver.
April 17, 2017 - Homicide
On Sunday, April 16, 2017 at approximately 2:45 pm, police were dispatched to the area of 3200 S 900 W on a dead body. When police arrived, they discovered a late model black Mazda passenger car in a parking lot with the driver's door open and a deceased male victim with a gunshot wound, which does not appear to be self-inflicted.
January 9, 2017 - Fatal Crash
On January 8, 2017 a fatal crash occurred on State Street at I-80. A 36 year old male victim driving a white Hyundai was struck by a stolen black BMW SUV. The victim was ejected from the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of the crash, the BMW SUV was occupied by three individuals - two males and one female. When police arrived on scene, all three of the occupants of the SUV had exited the vehicle.
November 21, 2016 - Books to the Rescue
Ashley Jacobson brings Books to the Rescue to South Salt Lake Police. Books to the Rescue! is a sponsored initiative by the Community Foundation of Utah to stock first responder vehicles with engaging children's books and stuffed animals for children in crisis situations.
November 18, 2016 - Shooting
On Friday, November 18, 2016 at approximately 4:00 pm, the male suspect and his girlfriend (female victim) went to 480 E Stanley Ave to get a cell phone from the girlfriend's mother. The mother was not home so the female victim decided to take an X-Box belonging to another (non-related) person in the household as collateral. An argument ensued, and the 22 year-old suspect fired two shots. One bullet hit the ground and the second bullet hit the victim in the upper torso.
September 12, 2016 - Aggravated Armed Robbery
On Monday, September 12, 2016 at approximately 10:57 am, the Maverik Convenience Store, located at 514 W 3900 S, was robbed at gun point. The employee told police that three young black males in the 20s walked in to the store, looked around for a short time, then approached the counter, brandished a silver handgun and demanded cash. The three suspects ran out of the store to a small red passenger car that was parked in the neighborhood directly behind the Maverik.
August 17, 2016 - 2016 Pete Suazo Boxing Invitational
The South Salt Lake Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) is hosting it's 7th annual Pete Suazo Boxing Invitational Friday and Saturday, August 19th & 20th, starting at 6:30 pm each night, at the Central Park Community Center - 2797 S 200 E. This event was established to honor the late Senator Pete Suazo, whose dream was to give inner city youth a positive outlet. This event will host male and female amateur boxers from Utah, California, Nevada and Idaho, ages 8 to 21.
July 22, 2016 - Package Theft Sting Puts Two Thieves In Jail
On Thursday, July 21, 2016 the South Salt Lake Police Community Resource Unit initiated a "package sting operation" in response to reports of delivered packages being stolen from the porches of local neighborhoods.
The package sting operation was a success, with two individuals being arrested and booked in to jail on separate incidents.
June 29, 2016 - Armed Robbery
At approximately 8:30 PM on Sunday, June 26, 2016, Smoker's Point at 283 E 3300 S was robbed at gun point by two males. Both suspects brandished handguns and threatened the store employee.
Suspect #1 was a white male wearing a black ball cap, gray long sleeved shirt with a Pittsburgh Steelers pin on the coller, and had a moustache and a long goatee. Suspect #2 is an unknown male wearing all black with a black face mask.
March 31, 2016 - South Salt Lake Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) Receives 2015 FBI Director's Community Leadership Award
The South Salt Lake Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) is being honored for its commitment to the PAL Boxing Program, that seeks to reduce juvenile crime through positive youth development and promotion of academic excellence in collaboration with community and law enforcement partners. Mayor Cherie Wood said, "We are so proud of the youth of our community, and so grateful for our very unique police department and its innovative approach to reducing crime in South Salt Lake."
The FBI Director's Community Leadership Award is an award presented annually by each of the FBI's 56 field offices across the country. The award was created in 1990 as a means for the FBI to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts in improving the lives of the most vulnerable within their communities.
November 30, 2015 - Sherry Black Homicide
Five years ago on this date, November 30, 2010, at 1:43 PM, South Salt Lake Police were dispatched to B&W Billiards & Books (3466 S 700 E) on a possible homicide. Sherry Black had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death. Police were able to recover blood evidence from the crime scene. The suspect's blood DNA profile has been entered on the nationwide database CODIS, but has not yet identified a match.
The investigation of the Sherry Black murder is still ongoing, and has never been considered a "cold case". There is a $50,000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the brutal death of Sherry Black.
